Submission: The Dawning Series
Paid Playwright Development with Solar Stage
Application Deadline: August 15, 2018
Solar Stage is now accepting submissions for their inaugural Dawning Series, a workshop process to develop Canadian playwrights writing specifically for Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA). We want to provide a safe space in which writers can exercise their ideas, depicting diverse Canadian viewpoints to families through imaginative theatrical experiences.
Thanks to the generous funding of the Toronto Arts Council, this is a paid program which will provide 5 selected playwrights the access to workshopping, dramaturgy and mentorship with Solar Stage’s Artistic Director Dahlia Katz, and culminating in a professional rehearsed reading of their play. Between October and April, monthly sessions will offer playwrights feedback and a place to develop their scripts, as well as sessions with professional actors. The resulting pieces will reach 30-50 minutes in length, and be showcased to the public in a festival setting in June 2019.
If you are interested in applying please submit to email@example.com. Please include the following:
- A proposal for a script intended for audiences under 11 and their families, keeping in mind we are looking for a broad appeal to public audiences, not curriculum-based school presentations. (2 pages max)
- Up to 10 pages of example writing
- A cover letter detailing why you are interested in this program, any relavent TYA experience, and a response to a recent TYA production seen as an audience member. Feel free to list any previous experiences with Solar Stage and/or Solar Stage productions.
- Applications will be evaluated on the strength of the proposed play concept and its potential appeal to public family audiences, as well as its theatricality. We will be endeavouring to create a strong cohort of playwrights who will support and enrich one another's experience throughout the Dawning process and beyond.
